Epilepsy

About 2 million Americans of all ages and races have epilepsy, including 300,000 children. Seizures can start at any age, but often they begin before age 15 or after age 65. Seizures can take several different forms, including a moment of staring off into space, a twitching of various body parts, or a full-blown attack that causes the person to fall down and convulse all over for a few seconds to a few minutes. Today, thanks to regular treatment with medicines that prevent seizures, many children with epilepsy have these episodes infrequently or not at all. For children attending daycare or school, summer camp, or even field trips with other parent volunteers, consider having your child wear one of our brightly colored wristbands so that anyone around him or her can assist in the event of a seizure episode and notify you immediately on your cell phone.
